Hacienda Matapalo named to Green List
Hacienda Matapalo Chosen in 2009 Green List of Central America Properties
The Green List focuses on communities in Latin America with a specific focus on preserving the environment, with specific emphasis on Bio-Diversity, Energy Efficiency, Green Building Principles, Water & Waste Management, and Social Responsibility.
All readers of this newsletter are aware of the Bio-Diversity of Hacienda Matapalo, but we thought it timely to reiterate some of the other reasons why Hacienda Matapalo has been chosen to receive this Green Ranking.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY:
• Use of solar power in dwellings and throughout the development
• Use of high-efficiency, room/area specific, split system A/C’s… No ductwork as with typical Central A/C system. Delivers dust free, allergen free cooled air and can be up to 70% more efficient than typical Central A/C
• Use of high EER appliances in dwellings and throughout the development
• Use of tankless, “on-demand” hot water systems in dwellings and throughout the development
• Proper thermal envelope on all construction
• Occupancy sensors for lighting in dwellings and throughout the development
• Proper window orientation for natural lighting and ventilation
• Use of CFL lamps/bulbs for indoor and outdoor lighting (LED where appropriate)
• On-site nursery for landscaping (reduces energy usage in transport and pollution during transport)
• On-site mini-concrete facilities (reduces energy usage in transport and pollution during transport)
GREEN BUILDING PRINCIPLES:
• Respect natural growth… only removing plants and trees absolutely necessary
• Re-plant, Re-forest 3-1 all trees removed throughout the development
• Conservation of green spaces and natural growth
• Protection and Conservation of all natural resources throughout the development
• Respect sloped areas to minimize run-off and preserve proper drainage
• Minimal soil and vegetation disturbance
• Respect low density Master Plan and minimize footprint in all areas
• Closely managed Bldg site to minimize waste
• Collection and re-use of water at Bldg sites
• On-site bins to collect and separate scrap materials for re-use or recycling
• Use of recycled/post consumer materials
• Use of renewable materials in dwelling construction as well as throughout the development
• Summary: Resource/Energy/Water Efficiency, Indoor Air Quality, Operation/Maintenance and Homeowner education
WATER & WASTE MANAGEMENT:
• Main water source is natural spring on property.
• Use of tankless hot water systems in dwellings and throughout the development

• Use of aerators in showers and sinks
• Use of water saving and dual-flush toilets
• Re-use of grey water
